What is Sci-Fi Con?

Sci-Fi Con is not just another event — it’s an immersive, multi-sim celebration of everything science fiction, hosted entirely within the virtual world of Second Life. For over 17 years, it has grown into the largest sci-fi themed convention in SL, featuring everything from alien bazaars and roleplay groups to space station raves and cutting-edge virtual builds.

It’s part exhibition, part party, part fundraiser — and 100% community-powered.

A Living, Breathing Virtual Convention

While many conventions rely on static web content or video streams, Sci-Fi Con is built in real time inside Second Life — where you don’t just attend the con, you inhabit it.

You can:

  • Explore massive multi-region builds filled with sci-fi cities, alien landscapes, and themed zones.
  • Interact directly with avatars from across the metaverse — builders, fans, DJs, scripters, artists, and cosplayers.
  • Join live in-world events: dance parties, panels, parades, contests, machinima premieres, and more.

How It’s Structured

Each year, Sci-Fi Con has a central theme (e.g., Galactic Frontiers, Neon Apocalypse, or Time Rifts), and is divided across multiple themed regions (“sims”). Boothers identifying with the particular theme of a region set up shop, or exhibit their craft:

  • The Nexus Hub: Central gathering point, information kiosk, teleport links.
  • Merchants: Home to dozens of exhibitor booths: from weapon and vehicle makers to avatar modders and alien tailors.
  • Roleplay Zones: Live-action areas for RP groups to showcase their worlds.
  • Event Arenas: For live performances, DJ sets, and competitions.
  • Art Galleries: Featuring sci-fi themed visual and interactive works.

Why It Exists

SciFiCon is a passion project — built by fans, for fans. But it’s also a force for good. For 15 years, the convention fundraised for Relay for Life (American Cancer Society). In recent years, it has shifted its support to #TeamFox, contributing to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Through donations, auctions, and in-world purchases, attendees help raise real money — in a virtual setting — for real-world causes.

Who Attends?

SciFiCon welcomes a global and wildly diverse crowd:

  • Veteran SL residents and builders
  • Newcomers curious about sci-fi and virtual worlds
  • Artists, coders, DJs, and cosplayers
  • Supporters of Parkinson’s and cancer research
  • And every flavor of alien, android, robot, or sentient jellyfish you can imagine

Are you ready to join?

Whether you want to showcase your builds, perform on stage, or just explore — Sci-Fi Con is for you. Sci-Fi Con is about discovery, community, and a shared love of worlds beyond our own.
